Bryant Black leads at New Ulm Invitational

NEW ULM — Bryant Black is making his New Ulm Invitational debut this year, but he’s no stranger to the New Ulm Country Club.

Black, who is the men’s and women’s golf coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato, shot a 69 in his tournament debut on Saturday to take the lead of the Championship Flight.

“Fairly familiar, I played it back in college a bit, I haven’t played it much, but I’m familiar with it enough,” Black said.

The tournament will wrap up today and Black said there’s not pressure for him. He leads former MSU golfer and New Ulm High School graduate Ethan Kraus by two strokes. Lukas Stull and Connor Power are tied for third with a 72.

“Not really thinking about it, I get to play with Ethan Kraus and that’s always fun,” Black said. “Connor Power is another former player, it’s going to be fun, we’ve played in a bunch of tournaments in the past.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are Andrew Peter and Kevin Atnip, who both are shooting a 73 heading into Day 2 action.

New Ulm’s Rob Geistfeld is the First Flight leader after Day 1, coming into the clubhouse with a 78. He sits three strokes ahead of fellow New Ulm golfer Joey Schugel (81) and Madelia Golf Club member Carson Wihlm (81). New Ulm’s Dan Reinhart is fourth in the First Fligh with an 85 and Randy Kirchberg is fifth with an 86.

Brian Messer, another New Ulm Country Club member, leads the Second Flight with an 84. He sits three strokes ahead of New Ulm’s Ryan Galvin, Rum River Hills golfer Peter Kliber and Normanside Country Club member Tom Gregg, who all shot an 87.

Larry Hahka leads the Senior Championship Flight after the first day after he fired a 70. He’ll try to fend off Joe Eckstein of New Ulm, who shot a 72. Another New Ulmite, Don Olson, sits at 73 heading into Sunday’s play.

Hahka and Ethan Kirchberg lead the First and Players’ Pool Game (158) and Ron Helm, Jeff Wesselmann and Jerry Boddy lead the Third Flight Net Stroke Play (72 each).
