Stark wins wild contest

SPRINGFIELD — Stark scored seven runs in the eighth inning and knocked out Springfield 16-15 in a sloppy Region 2C amateur baseball game on Friday.

The Tigers committed seven errors in the game and held a 10-2 lead after two innings.

Stark will play the winner of Hanska and Courtland on Saturday for the No. 3 seed.

Stark jumped on the board right away against Springfield righthander Brandon Wilhelmi, scoring twice in the first inning. Adam Sellner’s single up the middle scored Jake Mangen and Brandon Helget.

The Tigers took the lead after Branden Flock led off the bottom the first with a deep triple to right-center, Sam Baier hit a deep fly to center that Brandon Helget caught, allowing Flock to score to make it 2-1. Pat Moriarty singled with the bases loaded to score two runs and Jake Poehler followed with an RBI single to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. With the bases loaded again, Flock hit a grounder that was booted, allowing two more runs to score.

Stark starter Josh Kopacek lasted just one inning, allowing eight runs on nine hits.

Jordan Milbrath added to the lead in the bottom of the second, ending Kopacek’s night with a two-run, bases-loaded double to give the Tigers an 8-2 lead. Moriarty drove in two more runs with a with a single to make it 10-2.

Stark added a run in the top of the fifth after Mathiowetz had an RBI double. An error in center allowed the Longhorns to add another run in the sixth. Sean Mathiowetz and Jake Mangen followed with back-to-back two-run singles to cut Springfield’s lead to 10-8.

Isaac Fink’s triple scored Scheffler and Milbrath drove in his third run of the game, scoring Fink for the 12-8 lead, but the Longhorns scored seven times in the eighth inning thanks to three Springfield errors to grab a 15-12 lead.

The Tigers got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth, but the Longhorns held on for the win.
