New Ulm 16U team competes at state tourney

NORTH MANKATO — The New Ulm Blue 16U softball team went 4-1 at the 16U state tournament at Caswell Park over the weekend.

Against Buffalo in a 2-0 win, Karson Schmid struck out nine for the win. Brooke Bejarano drove in two runs. Brenna Thordson, Bejarano, Megan Haala, Calyn Glaser, Ella Freiderich and Laura Bertrang each had a hit.

New Ulm defeated the Titans Black 20-5. Bertrang had four hits to lead New Ulm. Thia Achman, Glaser, Haala, Freiderich and Bejarano each drove in runs for New Ulm.

Columbia Heights defeated New Ulm 5-4. Schmid took the loss, giving up five runs on four hits, striking out nine. Bertrang hit a home run while Emma Brudelie, Achman, Haala, Freiderich and Bertrang each had a hit for New Ulm.

New Ulm also defeated the Mankato Peppers 8-3. Glaser, Haala and Freiderich each drove in a run for New Ulm. Schmid struck out seven in five innings. In the game against Pure Energy, New Ulm picked up a 5-1 win. Schmid struck out two and allowed three hits for the win. Freiderich, Bertrang, Schmid, Brudelie each had multiple hits in New Ulm’s 10-hit attack.
