NEW ULM — New Ulm VFW Silver swept the New Ulm 14U team 6-1 and 9-6 on Saturday at Mueller Park.

Grant Bruns when the distance in the opener for Silver. He went five innings, allowed one hit and one walk and also an unearned run.

Silver was led at the plate by Kyle Seidl, who went 2 for 3. Nick Zins went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Brick Wellman picked up the 14s only hit and Kyle Larson threw two innings in the losing effort.

In Game 2, Silver survived a scare in the nightcap.

Silver took a 2-0 lead in the first, but the 14s scored five runs in the bottom of the second.

Silver responded with four runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

The 14s fought back in the bottom of the fifth, putting the tying run on base before Silver finally escaped with the victory.

VFW Silver was led by Anton Freiderich, who threw 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run for the win. He also 2 for 2 with an RBI. Taylor Hansen went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, two RBIs, a stolen base and he got the last two outs for the save. Jack Albrecht went 3 for 4 with two stolen bases.

Leading the way for the 14s was Logan Meilke, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI and Blaine Olsen went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Zack Paszkiewicz was 1 for 1 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Silver hosts Sleepy Eye VFW at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
