Greyhounds eliminate top-seeded Warriors

ST. PETER — Coming into their Section 2A, North Subsection championship game Monday night against No. 1-seeded BOLD, second-seeded New Ulm Cathedral knew that it had so slow down the Warriors.

“We knew that they were a good team,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said about the 27-1Warriors. “So the fewer possessions that they had would benefit us.”

Cathedral stuck to that game plan to the letter as they held the high-scoring BOLD offense — that had been averaging nearly 80 points a game — to a just 28 points in the first half before dominating them 53-40 in the second half to come away with an impressive 82-68 win at Gus Young Court at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Chris Knowles paced Cathedral with 24 points, with running mate Jon Zinniel adding 21 points. Jon Adema came off of the bench to spark the Greyhounds with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Sam Knowles tossed in 11 and James Gillis had 10.

Chris Knowles brought down 13 rebounds, with Sam Knowles hauling down 12 boards.

Drew Sagedahl led the Warriors, who end their season at 27-2, with a game-high 30 points.

The Greyhounds, now 26-3, will play at 6 p.m. Friday at Minnesota State University, Mankato against Springfield (26-3) for a trip to the state tournament.

For Cathedral, the win was redemption for a regular-season game on February 18 in a 59-53 loss on the road to the Warriors.

“That game we got off to a hot start — we got a big lead — and then we were not able to take care of the ball,” Woitas recalled. “But tonight, we were able to answer every run.”

And the Warriors were not.

BOLD took a 19-10 lead early as they sagged back and enticed the Greyhounds to shoot the 3.

“That was something new,” said Woitas. “And then Jon Adema came in off of the bench and he had three 3-pointers. He had not played in our first two playoff games. Credit to him for being ready.

“He (Adema) is one of our better bench players as far as a shooter and if they were not going to guard him, he was going to make then pay.”

A James Gillis 3 gave Cathedral a slim 29-28 lead at halftime before Blake Plass canned a 3 for a 31-29 BOLD lead to open the second half.

That was the last lead the Warriors had in the game.

Two more 3s from Adema sandwiched around a Chris Knowles 3 followed by a Chris Knowles rebound basket gave the Greyhounds a 41-31 lead.

And Cathedral never looked back.

A basket and two free throws from Zinniel lifted Cathedral to a 45-34 lead that expanded to 50-37 on a conventional three-point basket from Gillis.

Two Sam Knowles free throws made it a 70-57 lead with three minutes left in the game.

A 5-0 run on baskets on three free throws and a Sam Knowles basket made it a 77-65 lead with just over a minute left in the game.

And Cathedral’s rebounding bottled up BOLD.

“And we had seniors make some big plays and big shots tonight,” Woitas said. “And we rebounded well on the defensive end.”

Cathedral outscored BOLD 12-6 to close out the game.
