Steel set to host Alexandria this weekend

NEW ULM — Those who are going to the New Ulm Steel game against Alexandria Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center may want to get there a lot earlier than for past home games.

One reason is that crowds for the past Steel, who are on a 14-game winning streak, have been over 900.

The other reason is that on the same day the New Ulm Figure Skating Club will have two shows that day at 1 p.m. and also at 7 p.m. on the South (Olympic) Arena, which means that the last regular-season home game for the Steel will be on the North (Regulation) Arena.

The NUFSC will present “Legends and Divas” twice on Saturday and once on Sunday at 1 p.m.

And the Steel and the Blizzard will get to know each other very well this weekend.

New Ulm takes its 14-game winning streak on the road to Alexandria Friday before hosting them Saturday. The Steel then close out their regular season schedule in Alexandria Sunday afternoon before playoffs begin next week.

In other words, it is going to be a busy Saturday for both sheets of ice.

One big issue that will happen for the Steel game is the limited seating in the North Arena.

“The North Rink is not big enough to be able to hold the crowds that we have been getting, so we are going to have to turn people away which is unfortunate because it means a loss of revenue for us,” Black said.

Black said that he and the New Ulm Steel want to help the NUFSC have a great event.

“This was not intended to create conflict — it just happened — we all want to work together.”
