Steel pick up 12th straight win

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Steel’s winning streak is alive and well at a dozen.

Nick Wieben’s one-timer from just inside the blueline with 33 seconds left in the game capped a three-goal third period as the Steel overcame a 4-2 Breezy Point lead to edge the North Stars 5-4 Saturday in a NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center,

The win was the Steel’s 12th straight and was Breezy Points 12th consecutive loss.

Jacob Halvorson scored twice for the Steel with Parker Dorn and Joey Gimberlin each adding goals.

Michael Savelkoul had three assists with Keegan Bauman adding two helpers. Tommy Broten, Drake Raduns-Parsley, Josh Baker and Gimberlin each adding helpers.

Steel goalie Jack Raymond started but was pulled after allowing Breezy Point’s third goal. Igor Samokhlavov came in and allowed the last goal.

The Steel trailed 4-2 after two periods and were in danger of seeing their winning streak snapped at 11 after an emotional 3-1 win Friday over West Division leading Granite City.

“We were physically and mentally exhausted tonight,” Steel coach Zach Stepan said. “A lot of our guys were gassed after Friday. They gave it all Friday.”

The Steel took a 1-0 lead on a Gimberlin goal at the 3:30 mark of the first period. But Breezy tied the game on the first of three Brett Reed’s goals and then took a 2-1 lead on his second goal of the game.

Halvorson tied the game at 2-2 at the 9:56 mark of the second period on his 29th goal of the season.

But Breezy scored two goals in a span of just over two minutes to carry a 4-2 lead into the final period.

“I feel bad for Jack because we had defensive zone breakdowns and he had not had a game in a long time,” Stepan said.

Parker Dorn’s goal at the 8:41 mark cut the lead to 4-3 before Halvorson knotted the game at 4-4 at the 11:10 mark setting the stage for Wieben’s 19th goal for the game winner that clinched a playoff spot for the Steel.

New Ulm (26-11-2-1) play at Granite City next Saturday.
