MVL girls rout Cleveland, Tigers top BLHS

MVL 66, Cleveland 32

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran raced to a 43-14 halftime lead and defeated Cleveland in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Monday.

Abbie Riederer led the Chargers with 16 points, eight steals and two blocks. Emma Nelson had 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Ten of the Chargers’ 14 players scored on the night.

Olivia Merseth finished with seven rebounds and Kaylee Hunter and Maddie Pearson each had six assists.

MVL (13-2) hosts Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

Springfield 72, BLHS 65

HECTOR — Springfield defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 72-65 on Monday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Springfield was led by Sydney Hauger with 20 points, Meriah Kirschstein with 12 points and Megan Ploeger with 10 points.

For BLHS, Sara Kottke had 16 points and four rebounds, Maddy Wulkan had 14 points and Lily Dean had 9 points and six assists.

BLHS plays at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Wabasso. Springfield plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at New Ulm Cathedral.

St. Mary’s 70,

Sibley East 52

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Sibley East 70-52 on Monday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

St. Mary’s was led by Madison Mathiowetz with 35 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Sydney Windschitl with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

St. Mary’s (13-2, 7-2) hosts Cedar Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Boys’ basketball

Springfield 82, W/WG 54

SPRINGFIELD –Springfield defeated Westbrook/Walnut Grove 82-54 on Monday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Springfield’s leading scorers were Decker Scheffler with 25 points, Mason Leonard with 15 points and Noland Hovland and Mitchell Buerkle, each with 11 points.

Springfield (13-1) hosts Redwood Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

CM 78, HL-O-F 70

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain defeated Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Monday.

Trey Peterson-Juhl scored 23 points and Chris Dow finished with 19 for the Cougars. Caden Kleinschmidt also scored 19 for Cedar Mountain.

Cedar Mountain is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday.

Loyola 90, Madelia 87,

MANKATO — Mankato Loyola defeated Madelia 90-87 in triple over time on Monday in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

For Madelia, Ja’Sean Glover had 42 points and 14 rebounds, Ethan Arndt had 15 points and seven rebounds and Kadin Benzel had 15 points.

Madelia (4-8) plays at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

Girls’ hockey

Hutchinson 5, New Ulm 2

HUTCHINSON — Hutchinson defeated New Ulm in a nonconference girls’ hockey game on Monday.

Maddi O’Connor and Brooke Arneson each scored a goal for New Ulm.

New Ulm hosts Mankato East on Tuesday.
