MLC men fall to Superior

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College men’s basketball team fell short against UMAC-leading UW-Superior in a 69-54 loss on Saturday.

The Knights fell behind early by the score of 14-3, but coach Greg Holzhueter changed to a zone defense that frustrated UWS and helped MLC cut the deficit to 33-30 at the half.

Ian Paulsen led MLC with 15 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks. Josh Tomlin added four steals and 6 points, while Austin DeNoyer finished with 7 points.

MLC fell to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 8-6 on the season and 6-0 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Monday when they host Concordia-Moorhead in non-conference action. That game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.

Women’s basketball

NEW ULM — The MLC women’s basketball team lost to UMAC-leading UW-Superior 78-48 on Saturday.

The Knights came out strong to open the game, but the Yellowjackets closed the first quarter with a buzzer-beater three-point field goal to take a 22-15 lead.

UWS began to separate itself in the second quarter, out-scoring MLC 21-10 to built a 43-25 halftime lead, and then put the game away in the third quarter by hold the Knights to only seven points on the way to the win.

Emily Witkowski led the Knights with 15 points. Cassandra Rose added seven points and team-high 10 rebounds off the bench. Kati Aguilar blocked four shots to go with four points and five rebounds.

MLC fell to 0-13 on the season and 0-6 in UMAC play in defeat. UWS improved to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Crown College for a game scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
