Naidow keeps Steel at bay as Coulee Region breezes to 5-1 win

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Coulee Region Chill breezed past the New Ulm Steel 5-1 on Friday night in NA3HL action at the Green Island Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Jacob Best put the Chill on the board 6:50 into the second period on an assist from Marco Escobar. The Chill went up 2-0 minutes later after a goal by Gijs De Schepper on an assist from Zach Cherry.

Best and Escobar then assisted on a Parker Severson goal 3:04 into the third period to put the Chill up 3-0.

Jacob Halvorson added the Steel’s lone goal of the night at 15:34 into the third period on an assist from Tommy Broten and Keegan Bauman. Escobar and Sam VanderHoeven quickly tacked on two late goals for the Chill less than 30 seconds apart, however, to lead to the final score.

Zac Hattan was in net for the Steel and had 29 saves on 32 shots. Devin Naidow got the win in net for Coulee Region, stopping 35 of 36 Steel shots.

The Steel were 0 for 4 on the power play, while the Chill were 0 for 2. New Ulm outshot Coulee Region 36-34.

The Steel host Coulee Region for a rematch at 7:10 p.m. Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
