Prep roundup: Cathedral girls open with a win

Cathedral 34, RCW 25

RENVILLE — The New Ulm Cathedral girls’ basketball team started the season off with a 34-25 nonconference victory over Renville County West on Friday night.

The Greyhounds were led by Lily Franta, who had 9 points, while Emily Schommer had 8 points and Sarah Mohr added 7. RCW was led by Holly Bratsch, who scored 12 points.

Cathedral is at St. James next for a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday.

Redwood Valley 65, Cedar Mountain 29

MORGAN — Redwood Valley downed Cedar Mountain 65-29 on Friday night in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

Redwood Valley was led by Haley Garman with 21 points, while Hannah Schjenken had 16 points.

For the Cougars, Kailee Larsen and Grace Schouvieller added 8 points each.

Cedar Mountain travels to Prinsburg to take on Central Minnesota Christian on Tuesday.

St. James 53, Nicollet 41

NICOLLET — St. James Area held back Nicollet/Loyola on Friday night with a 53-41 victory in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

SJA was led by Chloe Mickelson, who had 16 points.

The Raiders were led by Marah Hulke, who had 12 points and nine steals. Megan Frutiger also had 11 points for the Raiders.

The Raiders are at Sibley East next Tuesday.

St. Mary’s 59, Adrian/Ellsworth 41

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s had no problem in its home opener at the St. Mary’s Tip-off Tournament in girls’ basketball action Friday night.

Madison Mathiowetz led the Knights with 28 points and five rebounds and Sydney Windschitl had 14 points and eight steals.

St. Mary’s (1-0) plays Cleveland at 1 p.m. on Saturday to resume the tournanment.
