New Ulm Steel slips past Willmar

NEW ULM — Stanislav Danaev’s goal at the 16:52 mark of the third period broke a 3-3 tie and Brandon Swenson’s goal less than two minutes later sealed the deal as the New Ulm Steel rebounded from a tough loss Friday with a 5-3 win over Willmar Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center in a NA3HL game.

Jack Parks, Joey Gimberlin and Nate Looft also added goals for the Steel. Corey Stormer had three assists with Teddy Lillico adding two helpers. Swenson, Parker Dorn, Gimberlin and Jacob Halvorson had assists.

Jack Raymond stopped 25 of 28 Willmar shots.

The Steel took a 1-0 lead on Jack Parks’ goal at the 1:49 mark. This was Parks’ 100th game as member of the Steel.

Willmar tied the game on an Eli Swager goal.

Brandon Holt’s power play goal early in the second period moved Willmar to a 2-1 lead and Zach Bender upped the Warhawks’ lead to 3-1 at the 8:32 mark.

Nate Looft’s goal with less than two minutes left in the second period cut the Willmar lead to 3-2 and set the stage for a three-goal third period by the Steel.

Jacob Halvorson’s goal at the 5:38 mark of the final period tied the game and set the stage for late goals from Danaev and Swenson.
