NEW ULM — In a season filled with some late, exciting finishes, the New Ulm boys’ soccer team added another positive chapter to their 2019 story.

The Eagles got another game-winning goal from Jack Howard with 1:05 left in the second overtime, his third game-winning goal in the last two weeks. Howard took a free-kick cross from Brandon Ocampo and he barely cleared it past the Waseca goalkeeper on a header to give the Eagles the 1-0 win over Waseca on Monday night at New Ulm High School.

The late-game win was a big one for the Eagles, who celebrated with a victory on Parent’s Night.

Howard was the hero once again, but the whole team has been coming up with big plays late in the game as of late.

“He’s been our top goal scorer all year, it’s really neat, he always seems to come up in the big moments,” junior Isaac Blumhoefer said. “I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been down or tied in the last 5 or 10 minutes and he’s come up with the goal, or other guys on the team. Everyone is contributing, it’s really neat to see that.”

New Ulm (6-6) lost to Waseca on Thursday by a 2-0 score and it looked like a scoreless tie was going to happen on Monday. But Blumhoefer said that the Eagles were able to take advantage of more playing space on Monday and they used that their advantage.

“The main difference between [Monday’s] game and Thursday’s game was the field,” Blumhoefer said. “This time we had a much larger field so we could stretch them out, expand the field. I honestly think that got them tired. Because we had more field, we had more space and we could possess the ball more.”

Neither team was able to get anything on the board in the first half as both defenses negated any real scoring chances. The Eagles had a few chances in the second half, but they were unable to convert and that led to the overtime session, where Howard and Ocampo teamed up to help deliver a win.

The Eagles have three games this week and they had three games last week, so there hasn’t been a lot of time to rest up. They host St. Peter on Tuesday and Marshall on Thursday and they have two more games next week to wrap up the regular season.

“Fatigue, but we just gotta push through,” Blumhoefer said. “Before every game we do warmups and you just gotta find that energy from deep down and I think all of us are finding that right now.”
