Area roundup: MVL downs Maple River, BOLD sweeps GFW

MAPLETON — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Maple River 25-23, 17-25, 25-18 and 25-20 on Monday in nonconference volleyball action.
Mara Weisensel had 18 kills and nine digs for the Chargers. Also for MVL, Emma Nelson added 16 kills with 12 digs (including 11 consecutive digs) and Maddie Pearson had 40 set assists with eight digs. Abbie Riederer contributed 12 digs and three ace serves (late in the fourth set).
MVL (6-3-1, 1-0) will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.
BOLD 3, GFW 0
WINTHROP — BOLD got past Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in three sets on Monday in nonconference volleyball action by a score of 25-16, 25-22, 27-25.
The Thunderbirds were led by Abby Heimkes’ six kills, while Julia Schweiss, Shelby Ramirez and Hannah Panitzke had four kills each. Ramirez also had eight sets assists, while Schweiss had three blocks.
Also for GFW, Kaity Lee had 18 digs, while Hannah Schroeder had 10 digs. Hannah Thorsen added seven set assists for GFW.
GFW hosts Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
RRC 20, BLHS 14
HECTOR — Red Rock Central held off a Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart comeback this past Friday night to win 20-14 in 9-man South District, West Subdistrict football action.
BLSH scored both of its touchdowns in the final quarter, but RRC matched those 14 points to hold off the Mustangs.
Zachary Rueber rushed for 126 yards and both TDs for the Mustangs on 20 carries, while Cale Luthens added 29 yards rushing on seven carries. Dylan Maiers and August Bergstrom led BLHS in tackles with 13 apiece, while Sutton Melberg added 10 tackles. Maiers also had two sacks and recovered a fumble, while Melberg recovered a fumble also.
BLHS (0-2) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Friday, while RRC (1-1) is in Westbrook Friday.
