Prep football roundup: Lakeview scores late to top MVL, GFW runs by St. James

Lakeview 20, MVL 16

LAKEVIEW — Lakeview came from behind in the fourth quarter to take down Minnesota Valley Lutheran 20-16 in Southwest District football action Friday night.

MVL was led by Luke Thompson, who threw for 71 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-18 passing. He also ran for 43 yards on 14 carries and added a rushing TD.

Carlos Ramirez ran for 71 yards on nine carries for MVL, while Jace Marotz had four catches for 32 yards and a TD.

Colton Collum had 17 tackles for the Chargers’ defense, while Mason Cox picked off a pair of passes.

MVL (0-1) is at Springfield for a 7 p.m. game Friday.

GFW 48, St. James 7

ST. JAMES — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop ran through St. James on Friday night in South Central District football action.

The Thunderbirds struck early and often with their run game for a 30-7 halftime lead, highlighted by a 55-yard touchdown run by Dominic Heinrichs. Ryan Lavrenz and JC Munoz also each had a rushing touchdown for the Thunderbirds.

St. James got on the board to trail 22-7 after a TD pass from Lucas Anderson to Hayden Jones and an extra point before GFW’s Damian Hopp caught a 7-yard TD pass from Brody Hentges. A 2-point conversion then led to the halftime score.

Lavrenz also had an interception for GFW in the second half. The Thunderbirds then forced a safety for a 32-7 lead before Hopp scored on a TD run of 11 yards late in the third for a 40-7 GFW lead after a 2-point conversion.

Nick TenEyck added the final touchdown for GFW on a 25-yard scamper late in the fourth.

Heinrichs finished with 94 yards rushing on eight carries, while Munoz had nine carries for 84 yards, Lavrenz had 15 carries for 70 yards and Jacob Rose rushed for 47 yards on two carries. Evan Martin also had 39 yards on the ground for GFW on nine carries, while Hopp had 32 yards rushing on four carries.

Ethan Schwarzrock, James Wickenhauser and Martin each had a sack for the GFW defense.

GFW had 444 yards of total offense compared to St. James’ 151 yards.

GFW (1-0) hosts Windom Area at 7 p.m. Friday.

Wabasso 45,

MACCRAY 8

WABASSO — Wabasso opened it 2019 football season in a big way, running past MACCRAY 45-8 in Southwest District football action on Friday night.

Nick Marotze led the Rabbits with eight carries for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Carter Benz threw for three TDs and 168 yards on 6-of-16 passing. Lance Wagner had a rushing  touchdown and a receiving touchdown for Wabasso and ran for 47 yards on eight carries.

Will Carlson and Hunter Taylor each had a receiving touchdown for Wabasso.

Wabasso (1-0) hosts Sleepy Eye at 7 p.m. Friday.

RCW 52,

Cedar Mountain 20

MORGAN — Renville County West’s first-half scoring barrage was more than enough to topple Cedar Mountain 52-20 on Friday night in 9-man South District, West Subdistrict football action.

RCW led 38-0 after one half before the Cougars could get on the board with a 16-yard Cade Schiller pass to Matt Zeug for 6. Nick Freitag scored Cedar Mountain’s second TD on a 6-yard run, while Vince Ochs had a 15-yard TD run to complete the scoring for the Cougars.

Schiller completed 15 of 27 passes for 141 yards, while Ochs ran for 140 yards on 22 carries.
