MLC roundup: Men sit 4th after Day 1 of TPC Invitational

Men’s golf

DULUTH — The Martin Luther College men’s golf team opened the 2019 season with the opening round of the Twin Ports Collegiate Invitational at Lester Park Golf Course on Friday.

The Knights sit in fourth place following a one-day total of 334 strokes.

Senior Zackary Zuberbier had a strong day one with a round of 78, good for fifth place individually at the event.

Stephen Biebert is tied for 13th place with a round of 83. Kyle Lindemann finished one stroke behind him and is tied for 16th place with a round of 84. Christopher Biebert and John Fix each shot 89 and are tied for 29th place.

The top UW-Superior team leads the team standings following a team score of 311. St. Scholastica (321) and St. Mary’s (325) round out the top three.

Women’s golf

DULUTH — The Martin Luther College women’s golf team opened the season at the two-day Twin Ports Collegiate Invitational at Lester Park Golf Course on Friday.

MLC shot an opening round total of 486, good for eighth place among the eight teams competing at the event.

Senior Alison Lindemann led the way for the Knights with a score of 101 and sits in 22nd place heading into Saturday’s Day 2.

Melina Satorius shot 114 and ranks 36th, while Lexi Fischer (130) and Rebecca Schilling (141) round out the MLC lineup in 43rd and 44th place, respectively.

The top team from St. Scholastica ranks first after one day with a total of 345. UW-Eau Claire (355) and St. Mary’s (390) make up the top three.

Women’s volleyball

BELOIT, Wis. — The Martin Luther College volleyball team opened its season at a tournament hosted by Beloit College on Friday. The Knights dropped the opening match 3-0 to Beloit by the scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-15, and followed that with a 3-1 defeat to Kalamazoo by the scores of 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18.

Beloit 3, MLC 0

MLC opened its season with a three-set loss to Beloit.

The Knights started slow with 13 attack errors in the first game, but came back to push Beloit in the second and falling in three.

Alyssa Heckendorf led MLC with eight kills and hit .333 for the match. Kati Aguilar and Kelsey Birschbach finished with six kills apiece, while Hannah Willems added five kills in her collegiate debut. Kate Aswege led MLC with 18 digs. Jewel St. Germaine added 17 digs and 15 assists.

Kalamazoo 3, MLC 1

The Knights finished day one with a 3-1 defeat to Kalamazoo.

After dropping the first two sets by the scores of 25-16 and 25-17, MLC came back to win the third game 25-22 to force a fourth game, which Kalamazoo was able to win 25-18.

Aguilar was credited with a team-best eight kills. Aswege led the team with 19 digs.

MLC will return to action Saturday when it plays Northland (11 a.m.) and Olivet (3 p.m.) on Day 2 of the Beloit Tournament.
