Legion Gold finishes 2nd in Gopher Classic

VICTORIA — New Ulm Legion Gold picked up a 7-1 win over Omaha Burke, NE on the final day of the Gopher Classic on Tuesday before falling to Wayzata 9-3 in the championship game, giving Gold a runner-up finish.

In Gold’s win on Tuesday against Omaha Burke, Aaron Portner got the win, pitching all seven innings and giving up five hits and three walks for one earned run with three strikeouts.

Braden Zimmerman and Hunter Ranweiler led Gold at the plate, each going 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored apiece. Ranweiler also drove in a run, while Teddy Giefer had three RBIs and a double and Chris Knowles had two RBIs and a hit.

In the loss to Wayzata, Colten Schaefer took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing seven hits for four earned runs.

Knowles led all Gold hitters with a 2-for-3 game, including a double and a solo home run. Mason Cox and Teagan Kamm each added an RBI for Gold’s other two runs. against Wayzata.

It was Wayzata’s third Gopher Classic championship in the last four years.
