New Ulm Gold stays unbeaten at Gopher Classic

New Ulm Gold went 5-0 over the weekend in the Gopher Classic, picking up a 13-4 win over Hopkins Post 320 in six innings and a 9-1 win over Forest Lake in five innings on Saturday before beating Wausau Post 10 6-1 on Sunday.

On Monday, Gold picked up two more wins. Gold defeated Edina 5-4 and Watertown 7-1.

In the game against Edina, Gold trailed 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh but scored two runs to grab the lead.

Nolan Drill earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings. He didn’t allow a run or a hit.

Mark Schommer pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and four runs. He walked five and struck out two.

Hunter Ranweiler was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Chris Knowles was 3 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored

Braden Zimmerman was 2 for 4 and Aaron Portner was 2 for 3.

Against Watertown, Cole Backer earned the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed five hits and one run. He struck out six.

Jaden Domeier was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Hunter Ranweiler was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Teddy Giefer scored two runs and Teagan Kamm was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Knowles was also 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Against Post 320, Jace Marotz got the win in four innings of work, giving up two earned runs on three walks and six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Gold was led at the plate by Domeier, who was 4 for 5 with four RBIs, while Teddy Giefer was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and Knowles was 3 for 4.

In the win over Forest Lake, Giefer took the win in five innings, allowing six hits and a walk for one earned run with five strikeouts. Cole Ranweiler was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, a double and a triple for Gold, while Knowles added a triple.

In Sunday’s win over Wausau, Zimmerman pitched seven innings and gave up eight hits and a walk for one earned run. He struck out three.

Mason Cox, Portner and Hunter Ranweiler each went 3 for 4 Sunday, with Cox driving in a pair of runs.
