Mankato defeats New Ulm Silver

NEW ULM — New Ulm VFW Silver’s regular season-ending game with Mankato Saturday was one where Silver got the chance to play all of their players as they prepare to face Mankato again at 6 p.m. on Monday in Sleepy Eye in the Southwest Sub-District Tournament.

New Ulm played all 16 rostered players and used seven pitchers as they fell to Mankato 8-1.

Isaiah Rieser — the first of seven arms used in the game by New Ulm — was charged with the loss.

Jack Weir got the win. Collin Jacobs had three hits for Mankato.

Rieser had two hits for Silver with their lone run coming on a bases-loaded walk to Jace Schaefer.

Silver assistant coach Mark Grossmann said that Silver’s game plan was to use their entire roster on Saturday.

“We threw what we consider our top four pitchers on Wednesday and I used everybody else one inning today,” he said. “Just for the fact that in sub-districts we could play five or six games so I need everyone available next week.”

Rieser, Riley Prochniak, Mitch Ulrich, Brody Bushard, Brayden Gearity, Carson Helget and Maddox Mortenson each saw action on the mound.

Mankato jumped to a 6-0 lead after three innings with a single run in the first, added two more in the second and then pushed across three big runs in the third on three hits an error as Silver got everyone in the game.

“Every one of our players got at least two at-bats today and multiple innings in the field,” Grossmann said. “This was a warm-up game for the playoffs against a team we play Monday. Neither team bunted or stole a base as neither team wanted to show each other anything.”

Mankato added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Silver used four walks in the bottom of the sixth to score their lone run.

Silver (10-13) now has to face Mankato — 20-5 and now 8-1 — in a playoff game. Mankato has defeated Silver twice this year.

“I don’t think that they have seen our best so far,” Grossmann said. “We have to come out swinging Monday. It is a playoff game.”
