New Ulm baseball had a week to remember

The past seven days for New Ulm baseball and for the City of New Ulm has been nothing but a grand slam.

It all started last Wednesday when Fox 9 TownBall came to New Ulm to broadcast live from Mueller Park and also toured parts of the city for feature stories that ran during their broadcast.

Fox 9 was also impressed by the atmosphere, the polka music, the Narren, the crowd [a record for Mueller Park] and the facilities.

They were also impressed by the design for the renovated Johnson Park.

And they also got to witness a great game between the New Ulm Brewers and Stark in which the Brewers got a late-inning rally for a big win.

The win for the Brewers that night and the win over Essig Sunday night now has the Brewers in first place, two games ahead of Hanska. They meet the Lakers this Friday in Hanska in a huge game for both teams.

And this past weekend, both New Ulm Legion Gold and the New Ulm Junior Legion played in tournaments. And both teams won their tournament.

Legion Gold won the Upper Midwest Classic for the first time since 2015, going 5-0 with wins over Luverne, North St. Paul, Eastview, Creighton Prep and Chaska.

“Everyone played well for us in the tournament,” Gold coach Chris Peters said about his team that is now 16-3. “One through nine I am confident in each hitter and their defense. No matter who I put into the line-up, they can do the job.”

Peters said that he does his best to give all of the players equal playing time.

“There are opportunities throughout each game.”

And winning the Upper Midwest Classic was special not only for the players but also the coaches.

“It has been a few years since we won it and to be able to play on Sunday was special,” he said. “It was a good feeling for the coaches and the players. In the last three days, we have seen the best pitching we have seen all year. Three of the teams that we beat threw their No. 1 pitcher — Creighton threw their No. 2 pitcher but he threw pretty decent.”

Legion Gold is off now until this weekend when they play in the Gopher Classic. Gold will play Anoka, Eden Prairie 2, Wausau, Wisconsin, Rapid City, S.D, and Forest Lake.

The New Ulm Junior Legion went 4-0 in the Alexandria Tournament. They defeated Elk River 2-1, Worthington 9-5, Alexandria 13-1 and Blaine 8-0 to improve to 15-6 on the season.

They outscored opponents 32-7.

Hunter Sehr, Ethan Stade, Nolan Drill and Teagan Kamm got the wins. Sehr and Stade are two young lefthanders with a boat-load of potential as they grow.

“The team came together and played well this weekend,” Junior Legion coach Mike Munce said. “We are playing well and four of our sub-section teams were in the tournament. We showed that we can play with them. The more games these kids play together and the more they are around each other, they are coming together.”

And you can get a chance to watch them play Wednesday and Thursday night at Mueller Park when they host Mankato Gold at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Hutchinson at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
