St. Peter wins marathon Game 1 of doubleheader against VFW Silver

NEW ULM — St. Peter VFW defeated New Ulm VFW Sliver 6-3 in a marathon 12-inning contest on Tuesday. It was the first game of a doubleheader.

The second game was still in progress when this edition of The Journal went to press.

In the three-hour first game, Seth Reichs smacked a one-out triple to the center field fence before Ethan Grant cracked a single to right-center field to give St. Peter a 4-3 lead in the top of the 12th inning. Grant then stole second and advanced to third base on a sacrifice. Josh Robb then singled and scored on an error, which led to the final score.

After seven innings, St. Peter regained its lead in the top of the eighth inning. Grant singled to center field and stole both second and third base. He scored on a Silver error for a 3-2 St. Peter advantage.

Jaden Drill hit a lead-off double to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning for Silver. Aidan Eckstein entered the game as a pinch runner. Eckstein reached third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

Earlier in the game, St. Peter scored first after getting two runs in the top of the third inning. Grant singled and Reece Wydent reached on a hit by a pitch. Grant and Wydent scored on hit by Jake Rimstad for a 2-0 St. Peter lead.

Silver answered in the bottom of the third with two runs of its own to tie the game. Carter Lang reached on an error and he scored Silver’s first run on a sacrifice by Drill. Carson Helget walked and he scored later on Riley Prochniak’s single, making it 2-2.

Silver next plays in Perham for tournament action on Saturday.
