Greyhounds move past BLHS

MANKATO — Facing elimination, the New Ulm Cathedral baseball team wasn’t ready for the season to end just yet.

Cathedral scored five times in the bottom of the first inning to run away with a 10-2 victory against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in the Section 2A baseball playoffs on Saturday.

Mark Schommer earned the win. He went 5 2/3 innings and struck out 12. He walked one and gave up two runs.

The loss ended the Mustangs’ season at 11-10 and the Greyhounds improved to 16-5 overall. The Greyhounds will play No. 3 seed Mankato Loyola, a 12-2 winner over Cleveland in five innings on Saturday.

Chris Knowles drove in two runs to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead and Tony Geiger’s RBI made it 3-0. Noah Wilmes added a two-run triple to put the Greyhounds up 5-0 after the first inning.

The Greyhounds added two runs in the bottom of the third after Knowles and Wilmes each scored a run, but the Mustangs got a run back in the fourth inning after Dylan Maiers scored on a single by Cale Luthens.

The Greyhounds responded in the fourth inning when Knowles took advantage of a high hop courtesy of the turf and circled the bases for the inside-the-park home run.

Hillesheim made it 9-1 after he scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, but the Mustangs responded with a run of their own in the sixth.

Knowles and Geiger each finished the game with two hits and Knowles had three hits, three RBIs, three runs scored and an RBI.
