Greyhounds make quick work of Bulldogs

NEW ULM — Josie Pautzke pitched a three-hit shut out to help New Ulm Cathedral down Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 10-0 in five innings on Thursday in a nonconference softball contest.

Pautzke pitched five innings with six strikeouts and she hit a batter. Alexia King was the losing pitcher. She went 4 2/3 innings, gave up eight runs (two earned), nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Things could have gone much differently because JWP loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first. A single, a hit batter and an error put Cathedral in that spot. Pautzke got Kiya Erler to hit it back to her and she threw Erler out at first to end the threat.

“That was a morale killer for JWP,” Cathedral head coach Jamie Portner said. “It was good for us mentally, and Josie pitched well.”

The Greyhounds inflicted major damage in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Cathedral scored eight runs on four hits and took advantage of some costly miscues by the Bulldogs.

Sarah Mohr reached on a Bulldog error. She went to second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on Lauryn Franta’s single, making it 3-0 Cathedral.

Pautzke walked and Abby Furth entered as a courtesy runner. Furth stole second and scored on Abby Beranek’s single.

Megan Haala’s single scored Franta and Hoffmann, making it 6-0 Cathedral. Mohr’s single scored Beranek and Haala for an 8-0 lead. Lily Franta walked and Mohr singled. The pair scored on an error by the JWP center fielder for the Greyhound’s final runs.

Lily Franta reached base on a single in the third inning. She wound up on third on a Bulldog error. Franta scored on a Josie Pautzke single for Cathedral’s first run.

Heidi Hoffmann singled in the fourth inning and she scored later on a Megan Haala sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Cathedral lead.

For Cathedral, Mohr went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Hoffmann was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and Lily Franta went 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

Cathedral (15-2)will travel to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday in a doubleheader.
