White Hawks eliminate Eagles

MOUND — Trailing 1-0 after one period of play in Section 2A girls’ hockey semifinals action against Mound Westonka on Saturday, New Ulm’s Elle Cooper knotted things up at 1-all on a power-play goal late in the second period.

But Mound Westonka showed why it was the No. 1 seed in the third period, getting four third-period goals to pick up a 5-1 win over the No. 4-seeded Eagles at Thaler Arena.

With the win, the White Hawks (21-0-5) move on to the Section 2A finals on Thursday at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Eagles end their season at 17-9-1.

Sophomore Brooke Pioske added the go-ahead goal from the blue line early on in the third period. Mound got three insurance goals, one from Pioske and two from Emily Scheppers, later on in the third period.

New Ulm senior goalie Cassie Reed had 27 saves, while Ashtyn Wiltscheck and Molly Scheid had an assist each.
