NEW ULM — Buena Vista swept Martin Luther College 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

The Beavers took command early in the first set taking advantage of some mistakes by the Knights. BV led 8-2 early in the set MLC clawed back getting as close as three points (16-13) later in the set. The Beavers got two kills and an attack error for the final points to win it.

Buena Vista put together a 10-0 run midway through the second set. The Beavers had six kills, a service ace and two ball handling errors by MLC. A kill scored the final point of the set to give the Beavers a 2-0 advantage.

“We competed very well in the third set,” MLC head coach Rebecca Cox said.

The third set was a competitive one because there were nine ties and seven lead changes. MLC did hold the lead several times throughout the set. The last advantage the Knights held was 16-15.

Buena Vista tied it at 16-apiece, then regained the lead of 17-16. MLC kept fighting to win the set, but the Beavers outscored MLC 9-4 to close out the set and win.

Cox said the Knights need to become more consistent and the team needs to make good passes. The conference schedule starts soon, and the Knights need to be ready and get the “kinks worked out”. She was pleased with how well the team played in the middle.

Jewel St. Germaine had 14 set assists, and nine digs. Ruth Bucholz had eight kills. Katelyn Aswege added 14 digs.

MLC (0-5) will participate in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
