French strikes out 13 as Brewers win

NEW ULM — Wade French struck out 13 St. James batters in seven innings of work and the New Ulm Brewers beat the Express 4-1 Wednesday night at Johnson Park in a Tomahawk East League game.

French walked three in his mound stint. Brody Peterson pitched the final two innings and fanned two.

Bronson Peterson took the loss for the Express (2-6).

J.T. Hoffmann had two of the Brewers five hits.

“He was dominant tonight,” Brewers manager Al Flor said about French, who recorded 11 of the first 15 outs of the game via the strikeout. “He had good velocity tonight and his slider was working well.”

The Brewers, who host Searles at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Hall of Fame game at Johnson Park, took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Hoffmann lead-off triple and scored on a passed ball.

The Express tied the game in the fourth on a walk and a Lucas Fredin double.

New Ulm then used a hit batter, a walk and a RBI single from Nick Fischer to ignite the three-run inning.

A one-out single from Landon Rewitzer upped the lead to 3-1 with Fischer rambling home on a Hoffmann base hit.

“That has been our hitting this year,” Flor said. “We have one good inning and then we slow down offensively. We are trying to improve on that.”

After that three-hit third inning, New Ulm (3-6) managed just one more hit the rest of the way.

Flor said he will throw Chris Cariveau on Sunday against Searles.
