Cathedral finishes 4th in Class A

NORTH MANKATO — Despite New Ulm Cathedral’s 4-1 loss in the Class A third-place game to Randolph at Caswell Park, Cathedral co-coach Bob Mertz couldn’t help but be happy.

The Greyhounds finished the year with a record of 20-4 despite having a young team. The Greyhounds weren’t favored to come out of the section but they did. And now, the team has something to build on in the future.

The Greyhounds were in a hole from the beginning on Friday. They gave up three runs in the top of the first and were playing catch-up the rest of the game.

“The last two games, we just didn’t hit the ball well,” Mertz said. “We hit the ball right at players. Even last night, we got our bat on the ball, we just didn’t get the hit when we needed one.”

Josie Pautzke took the loss for the Greyhounds. She gave up six hits and four runs, three of them earned. She struck out four and walked two.

Randolph scored three runs in the top of the first off Cathedral starter Josie Pautzke. Mackenna Otte started the game with a triple and she scored on Morgyn Otte’s infield single to Pautzke. Morgyn Otte and Megan Erickson later scored in the inning thanks to a couple of Cathedral errors.

The Greyhounds got a run back in the bottom of the first when Pautzke doubled to score Sarah Mohr. But after that, Randolph starting pitcher Morgyn Otte was tough. She allowed four hits in the complete-game win. She struck out three.

Randolph scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Meredith Taylor singled to score Erickson.

Offensively for Randolph, Erickson was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Both Mackenna Otte and Morgyn Otte were 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Mohr, Pautzke, Rose Hazuka and Brooke Landreville each had a hit for Cathedral.
