Hemmelman Named UMAC Player of the Year, Riediger earns All-UMAC honors

NEW ULM — Martin Luther College women’s tennis sophomore Anna Hemmelman was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Player of the Year on Tuesday. Hemmelman was also named All-UMAC, along with senior Rachel Riediger.

Hemmelman earned Player of the Year honors after an undefeated UMAC season (7-0) in number one singles play. She is the first MLC player to go unbeaten in conference play in the number one singles spot in the line-up.

Hemmelman opened the season with a pair of defeats in number one singles against strong competition, but closed the year with a 13-3 overall singles record that included an 11-match win streak to finish the season. She was also very strong in doubles play, finishing with a 9-7 overall record, including a 6-1 mark in UMAC contests in the number one spot.

This is the second time in Hemmelman’s two-year career in which she was named All-UMAC. She was also named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.

Riediger earned All-UMAC honors for the second straight season after going 5-2 in singles competition in UMAC play from the number two spot in the line-up. Riediger finished the season 7-7 overall in singles, and also recorded a 5-2 UMAC record in doubles (8-6) overall.

Riediger finished her four-year MLC career with a record of 22-35 in singles (almost all of them coming in the number two spot in the line-up) and a 23-35 record in doubles play.

The men’s tennis team was given the Team Sportsmanship Award, and senior Ethan Schultz was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award on the men’s side.
