Knights baseball team loses two against Westminster

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –The Martin Luther College baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Westminster (Pa.) on Monday by the scores of 9-3 and 14-1.

Westminster 9, MLC 3

The Knights lost the opener of the double header head to the Titans by the score of 9-3.

Westminster jumped on top with one run in the first inning off MLC starting pitcher Andrew Mantz (0-1), and then added two runs in the second and three more in the third inning.

MLC kept within striking distance with a Karl Kuschel RBI single in the first inning, and then added two more in the third on a Dillon Solomon triple and a Jared Lindemann RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Titans kept the line moving on offense, however, adding two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to secure the win.

Mantz pitched five innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits while striking out four.

Solomon led MLC with three hits, including one RBI and one run scored.

Westminster 14, MLC 1

The Titans secured the sweep with a 12-1 win in game two.

Westminster scored four runs in the second inning and five more in the third off Luke Willems (0-1), who started the game for MLC and pitched four innings. He allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 12 hits in defeat.

MLC put runners on base, but struggled to get them home as it left eight runners on base.

Adam Kock drove in the lone MLC run with a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning.

MLC fell to 0-6 on the season following the two defeats. Westminster evened its record at 2-2 with the two wins.

The Knights will close their Florida trip with a doubleheader against Penn State-Brandywine, with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 9 a.m. local time.
