Nicollet eliminates Madelia

NICOLLET — Nicollet downed Madelia 68-46 on Thursday in Section 2A, South Subsection boys’ basketball tournament action.

With the loss, Madelia finishes its season 3-23.

“We came out a little cold, they’re a scrappy team and they played really good defense,” Nicollet head coach Chris Hulke said.

Hulke said that Nicollet missed some shots on good looks at the basket, but his squad turned things around in the second half.

Eric Fischer’s 3-pointer gave Nicollet a 12-4 lead in a low-scoring first half. Anthony Macias dropped a 3-point shot and Fischer dropped in a basket to increase the Raiders’ lead.

Andrew Arduser hit a 3-pointer for Madelia and Nicollet’s Ean Thomsen answered with a 3-pointer of his own to make it 24-12 Nicollet at halftime.

The Raiders went on a 21-2 run in the second half. Riley Hulke scored 9 of those points from 3-point range. Josh Chadderdon and Dustin Bode accounted for Nicollet’s other 12 points for a 46-14 Raider advantage with 12 minutes left in the game.

Madelia’s Andrew Arduser and Kurt Lugo each scored to end Nicollet’s scoring run. Hulke fed Ben Bode the ball on a fast-break layup to make it 53-22 Nicollet.

Rigo Flores scored six consecutive points for the Blackhawks. He made two free throws and two baskets. His second one came on an offensive rebound..

Ramiro Zamora, Ja’Sean Glover and Angel Zamora all scored baskets to finish the game with a 10-2 run for the final score.

“The guys worked really, really hard,” Madelia coach Jeff Van Hee said. “They’re always trying, and I’m proud of the players for their effort and hard work.”

Hulke led Nicollet with 17 points and five assists. Chadderdon had 13 points and Thomsen scored 12 points and he had five rebounds. Macias added 9 points and five rebounds.

Nicollet (13-12) will play at 7 p.m. on Monday at Mountain Lake Area.
