New Ulm girls outdo New Prague with 6-3 win

Weiss' hat trick leads Eagles

NEW ULM — Dani Weiss recorded a hat trick Saturday afternoon as the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team defeated the New Prague Trojans 6-3 in nonconference action.

New Prague (7-9-1) struck first with a power play goal with 12 minutes left in the first period after New Ulm’s (14-3) Lauren Klein was penalized for interference.

One minute later, New Ulm’s Alexa Steffl tied the game in the first period with a goal from between the circles. Steffl’s unassisted goal came in low to beat the New Prague net-minder on the stick side.

Klein was penalized again in the first period for slashing, putting the Eagles on the two minute penalty kill. The Eagles were successful in the player disadvantage, keeping the clock running while changing lines during the penalty kill.

Weiss’ first goal of the game came unassisted when she held the puck in at the point to keep the play alive in the Eagles offensive zone. Weiss’ deke against a charging defender put her in front of the net as she buried the puck in the mesh.

“I just went in and wanted to get the puck in front of the net to get some sort of shot, I shot just over her left pad,” Weiss said.

New Ulm goaltender Cassie Reed recorded six saves and the Eagles put six shots on goal for the 2-1 lead in the first period.

The Trojans tied the game up 2-2 halfway through the second period on a power-play goal that beat Reed over the shoulder from her left faceoff dot. The Trojan goal came with a second left on the power play as Ally Steffensmeier was called for holding.

New Ulm’s Weiss picked up a bouncing puck at center ice and skated deep into the Trojans zone. Weiss took the puck across the Trojan crease, skating from glove side to stick side for the unassisted goal and a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles were able to add to their lead in the final seconds of the second period when Ali Beltz skated end to end for the shot on net. Beltz had to regain control of the puck in the neutral zone, skating through the poke checks of three Trojan players and the unassisted goal with three seconds left.

Eagle goalie Reed stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal in the second period with an Eagles 4-2 lead going into the third.

Steffensmeier was called for a two-minute interference penalty with 16 minutes left to play in the third. New Prague again capitalized on the power play with a goal, the puck coming in just under the crossbar on Reed.

The Eagles, having the dreaded one-goal lead with most of the third period to play yet, were rewarded by Weiss’ third goal of the game. Weiss carried the puck in for a 1-on-1, putting a move on the Trojan defender just inside the blue line and skating hard towards the net. Weiss, from the backhand, froze the Trojan goalie by going top shelf with the puck.

“I was surprised when I got the puck to the middle against their defense and then the backhand, I was aiming for that corner,” Weiss said.

The goal came in with just under two minutes to play in the game, unassisted for the insurance goal.

“We knew we needed that [insurance] goal to get ahead, [New Prague] we knew had good shooters and it only takes one shot,” Weiss said.

New Ulm added one more goal on an empty net shot from Lauren Klein unassisted; Klein’s goal was shot from just beyond the red line on the Eagle’s side of the rink.

In net for the Eagles, Reed stopped 18 of 21 shots to earn the 6-3 victory over the Trojans.

The Eagles are 8-0 in the Big South Conference and play at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday against conference opponent Marshall.
