SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye’s senior guard Sarah Ibarra needed 12 points to reach her 1,000th career point at the start of the Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game Thursday with the Indians hosting the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds.

At the end of the night, she finished with 27 points, six rebounds and three steals in a win over Cathedral 70-35.

“My parents have been with me in basketball through everything,” Ibarra said. “Basketball runs in our family and I want to thank my parents. I was just overwhelmed with happiness, excitement and nervousness at the same time.”

Ibarra also thanked her teammates and coaches.

Wth 6:34 left in the first half, Ibarra drove to the net from the middle of the lane, powering in a layup as the Sleepy Eye fans erupted with Ibarra reaching her 1,000th point.

Sleepy Eye coach Ryan Hulke called a full timeout and used this time to hand Ibarra a ball to remember her accomplishment. Ibarra rushed into the crowd with the ball in her hands and greeted her parents to thank them for all the support they have given her along the way.

“She needed 12 to get to the 1,000th,” Hulke said. “I didn’t expect her to go off like she did in the first half, scoring 18 points. We are very, very proud of her. It’s a great accomplishment, and she looked really good tonight.”

The Indians pulled out to an early 16-1 lead as the Greyhounds could not get the ball to drop. The Greyhounds missed opportunities, allowing the Indians to produce a high-scoring offense and keep Cathedral on the move.

Cathedral rallied back to trail 20-14, yet still having trouble with their shot percentage with 7:45 left to play in the first half.

“We have to get back to doing the things we haven’t done in a while, but we did the things we needed to do to get an early lead,” Hulke said.

Ibarra led the Indians with 18 points in the first half, while Madison Krueger and Madi Heiderscheidt put up 11 points each as the Indians held a 44-20 lead at the end of the first half.

Becca Schwarz led Cathedral with 6 points in the first half.

Cathedral’s Rose Hazuka found the rim in the early minutes of the second half hitting 3-pointers from way out side the arc and wasting no time on the offensive side of the court.

With 10:02 left on the clock, Sleepy Eye’s offense continued to be a threat for Cathedral with a 65-32 lead.

The Indians had seven players tally points in the second half as Ibarra led the second half scoring at 9 points.

Hazuka and Schwarz led the Greyhounds with 9 points, McKenna Miling had 7 points and Jenna Helget ended with four rebounds.

Heiderscheidt tallied 18 points, seven assists and five steals for the Indians and Krueger had 14 points and four steals.

Cathedral has a Tomahawk Conference game against MVL at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 7:30 p.m on Tuesday.
