Cathedral defeats St. Mary’s in 4 sets, Madelia wins

Cathedral 3, St. Mary’s 1

SLEEPY EYE –New Ulm Cathedral downed Sleepy Eye Mary’s 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Jenna Helget had 43 set assists and 19 kills for Cathedral. Rose Hazuka added 18 kills, Kristina Long had 17 kills, Sarah Mohr had 11 kills and 21 digs and Kristin Spaude added 28 kills.

Jody Hansen had 26 set assists with 13 digs and Ali Beltz added 20 digs with 13 kills.

Cathedral (14-11) and St. Mary’s (17-7) will participate in Section 2A tournament action with teams and locations TBA.

Madelia 3, LCWM 2

LAKE CRYSTAL — Madelia defeated Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia was led by Alayna DeLaCruz who had 15 kills, 10 digs and a block. Also for Madelia, CaleyAnn Clobes had seven kills and 11 digs, Carissa Caraway had 12 kills, 3 digs and 4 blocks, and Lizzy Cooling had seven kills, 36 digs and 47 set assists.

Madelia (11-17, 3-5) opens playoff action next week.

MLA 3, Springfield 2

SPRINGFIELD — Mountain Lake Area defeated Springfield 25-17, 19-25, 26-24, 16-14 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Springfield was led by Brandi Platz who went 24-for-24 serving with 3 aces. She also had 8 kills. Also for the Tigers, Arynzi Rabb went 23-for-23 serving with 3 aces and had 19 set assists and 27 digs. Brittany Rogotzke had 28 digs, Katelyn Hauth had 11 kills and a block, and Eva Mark had 10 set assists and a block.

Springfield opens playoff action next week against an opponent yet to be determined.

Wabasso 3, WWG 0

WESTBROOK — Wabasso defeated Westbrook-Walnut Grove 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Jenna Frank had 37 set assists for Wabasso. Maddy Guetter had 14 kills, Gina Goblirsch added eight kills with 9 digs and Cora Eichten had 6 kills.

Wabasso finished the regular season 23-5 overall and 8-0 in the Tomahawk Conference. It will face either Central Minnesota Christian or Yellow Medicine East in the Section 3A tournament on Oct. 27.

Mayer Lutheran 3,

Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Mayer Lutheran defeated Sibley East 25-13, 25-23, 25-15 on Tuesday in a Minnesota River conference volleyball game.

Sibley East was led by Morgan Stearns who had 11 kills, 10 set assists, 3 blocks and went 6-for-7 serving with an ace. Also for Sibley East, Taylor Brinkman had 16 set assists and 3 kills, Rachel Rettmann went 15-for-15 serving with an ace and had 3 kills, 3 digs and 2 blocks, and Kasha Bates who had 2 kills and 2 blocks.

Sibley East (12-15, 3-3) will be seeded for playoff action on Wednesday and will open tournament action next week.
