NEW ULM — Both teams had streaks on the line with St. Clair downing New Ulm Cathedral 25-21, 25-13, 25-27, 23-25, 15-6 on Monday in a nonconference volleyball match.

St. Clair was hoping to extend its winning streak to 10 out of the last 11 matches. The Greyhounds wanted to snap a losing streak of three straight matches.

The Cyclones put the match away in the fifth set by ending the set on a 6-0 run. St. Clair kept the ball alive at key times and score.

Cathedral led in Set 5 1-0 and 3-2. There were three ties before the Cyclones put together their winning rally in the final set.

St. Clair head coach Brandon Greiner complimented the Greyhounds for their ability to come up with the ball when needed, keep in play and also for being persistent in their play.

Cathedral earned an early 2-0 lead in the first set. When one team seemed to have the momentum, the other one would come back. The Cyclones outscored Cathedral 5-1 to close out the first set 25-21.

The second set wasn’t a perfect one for Cathedral, despite holding two leads and there being three ties. St. Clair ended set two on a 3-0 run.

Cathedral refused to die as the Greyhounds went toe-to-toe with St. Clair in the third set. Neither team led by more than 5 points throughout the set. Cathedral was able to earn the final 2 points for the set win.

The Greyhounds continued their enthusiasm in the fourth set. Things looked bleak for Cathedral when St. Clair held a 16-7 lead. Cathedral was able to keep coming back and earning points when needed. Cathedral tied it at 23-apiece before scoring the last 2 points to force the fifth set.

“Our front row play was our downfall,” Cathedral head coach Becky Wilfahrt said. “We didn’t put the ball away (and) we were sporadic”.

Wilfahrt attributed too many hitting errors in contributing to the loss. The Greyhounds have gone five sets in three out of the last four matches and lost each one.

Rose Hazuka had 17 kills and 28 digs for Cathedral. Jenna Helget added 37 digs, 27 set assists and 4.5 ace blocks.

New Ulm Cathedral (11-11, 2-5) will host Nicollet on Tuesday for a nonconference matchup.
