NEW ULM — The hard-hitting team of Wabasso continued to stay strong as it defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-7, 25-13, 25-16 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Thursday.

Wabasso (9-1) began its dominance, opening up an early 9-3 lead before MVL’s Grace Peterson dropped a kill from the right side to slow the Rabbits charge. MVL took advantage of hitting errors on the opposing side to close the gap, trailing 9-6.

“We played really well today dominating the first and second set-Overall we had a really good game, we stayed aggressive and worked as a team,” Wabasso coach Barb Johnson said.

Wabasso then went on a 16-1 scoring run to finish out the first set, a hitting error by Wabasso was the only point for MVL in the remaining scoring.

Wabasso again opened a 15-3 scoring run in the second set.

The Chargers gained some composure late in the second set to cut the deficit in half, trailing 16-8.

“We reminded our girls that we have to be big at the net, get up and over and control the area at the net,” MVL coach Sara Gieseke said. “We were tentative in the first two sets to hit.”

Wabasso gained the 25-13 victory with hitting from the outside as the key for it’s success in the victory.

The Chargers matched the scoring with the Rabbits in the early part of the third set as both teams were tied at 5-5. MVL recovered from passing errors from the floor to keep the set close in the early points.

The Rabbits had five serving errors in the third set allowing the Chargers to keep pace in the set.

“We gave up five serving errors in the third set, that’s five points for the other team and I don’t think we have done that all year,” Johnson said.

MVL recorded five different players with kills in the final portion of the set. Wabasso regained its dominate floor play and kept the ball close to the net, earning the third-set win 25-16 for the 3-0 victory.

Lauren Paulsen had six kills and Mackenzie Helget tallied seven set assists for MVL.

Maddy Guetter and Gina Goblirsch tallied 10 kills each for Wabasso, Jenna Frank ended the night with 34 set assists.

MVL will travel to Minnesota State University Mankato for the Mankato West Tournament play on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. against Sibley East.

Wabasso will host its tournament on Saturday with its first game at 9 a.m. against Redwood Valley.
