Jackson County Central sweeps New Ulm in volleyball

NEW ULM — New Ulm was met by undefeated Jackson County Central on Thursday and New Ulm was looking for its first win.

Things looked promising for the Eagles during the first set, but the Huskies buckled down and showed why they were still unbeaten.

The Huskies swept the Eagles 25-20, 25-14, 25-15 in a nonconference volleyball match.

Jackson County Central moved to 6-0 on the year after picking up their fourth sweep of the season, while New Ulm fell to 1-3.

Despite the loss, Eagles coach Zach Hansen was proud of the work he saw from his girls.

“We played our butts off tonight,” Hansen said. “That is one of the things that we set as a goal for our team. We’re in the learning process — we’ve got a lot of things that we’re putting in place. We’re running a quicker offense, but the biggest thing for us is that we had to play hard and I thought we did that tonight.”

New Ulm jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set, led by a kill from Nora Windschill and an ace block by Madeline Gag. Windschill finished the night with six kills, while Gag added six blocks.

The Huskies quickly came back and took a 7-6 lead after a tip by Sadie Voss. The Eagles then went on a brief run and took a 15-11 lead after a hitting error, which forced the Huskies to burn a timeout.

New Ulm continued its pace and led 18-13, before Jackson County Central went on an 8-0 run to lead 21-18 and quickly put things away afterwards.

The second set saw a quick 6-0 Huskies start before a tip by Abbey Lee put the Eagles on the board. A 10-2 Huskies lead forced the Eagles to take a timeout.

After an Ashlyn Donner kill cut the deficit to 17-12, the Huskies took 5 points back unanswered to lead 22-12. The Huskies then wrapped the second set up shortly after.

The Huskies and Eagles were tied at 6-apiece in the third set, before the Huskies went on a 4-0 run, which forced New Ulm to take a timeout. The Eagles pulled back within 2 after the timeout, but the Huskies went on an 8-2 run to lead 18-10 and force another Eagles timeout.

The Eagles were unable to create enough offense, however, to force a fourth set after the timeout.

“I think when we get out of system, we tend to scramble a lot and that’s when a lot of our mistakes rear their ugly heads,” Hansen said. “I think we need to do a better job on our scrambling drills and how we respond and handle those in times of adversity.”

Izzie Wolkow and Ellie Bute each had six set assists for New Ulm, while Sarah Longtin had 11 digs.

The Eagles host Worthington at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
