Mankato American knocks Sleepy Eye out of legion playoffs

STARK TOWNSHIP — Mankato American scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and used that momentum to defeat Sleepy Eye Legion 11-1 in seven innings on Thursday at the Sub-state playoffs at Stark.

The loss ends Sleepy Eye’s season at 7-16.

Mankato scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third inning and then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open at 8-0.

Sleepy Eye scored a single run in the top of the seventh inning after Nic Helget delivered an RBI, but Mankato scored three more times in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Helget took the loss for Sleepy Eye. He gave up six earned runs in five innings and allowed seven runs total. Alex Woitas pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, three of them earned.

Helget was 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI and Sean Salfer was 1 for 3 with a double. Carter Brinkman and Zach Haala each went 1 for 3 for Sleepy Eye.

Nate Kleist was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Luke Makovsky was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double. Carter Fogal was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
