All-Journal baseball: Kuck, Flock lead All-Journal baseball teams

FIRST TEAM

Kasey Kuck, sr., P/3B, Cathedral

Kuck was named the Tomahawk Conference Player of the Year this season as Cathedral’s ace on the mound. Kuck batted .369 with 22 RBIs and 16 runs scored on 24 hits. On the mound, Kuck went 4-2 with 56 strikeouts and a 3.83 ERA in 47 innings pitched. For his career, the three-year starter and two-year All-Conference selection batted .290 with 40 RBIs, 30 runs scored on 45 hits and nine stolen bases. He has a career record of 13-6 on the mound with 126 strikeouts and a 3.30 ERA.

Branden Flock, sr., P/OF, Springfield

Flock batted .500 this year with seven triples, 28 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. On the mound, Flock was 3-2 with a 5.10 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 23 innings of work. A four-year starter, Flock was an integral player on three state teams, including the one that won the state title in 2016.

Nick Fischer, sr., P/1B, MVL

Fischer finished his senior year with a 3-3 record in 10 appearances on the mound for the Chargers, having tallied 70 strikeouts with a 2.69 ERA in 39 innings pitched. At the plate, Fischer batted .415 with 11 RBIs and nine runs scored on 22 hits. For his career, the four-year starter batted .366 with 56 RBIs and 46 runs on 90 hits (23 doubles, five triples and four home runs).

Cole Wellmann, sr., P/IF, New Ulm

Wellmann was the Eagles’ ace on the mound this year, going 5-1 with 26 strikeouts and a 2.96 ERA in 45 innings of work. At the plate, the multi-year All-Conference selection batted .230 with an on-base percentage of .301 as well as 19 RBIs on 17 hits, including a grand slam against Owatonna.

Josh Seidl, so.,C, Cathedral

Seidl was a force at the plate this year, batting .443 with 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored on a team-high 31 hits. From behind the plate, Seidl threw out 24 percent of the base runners who attempted to steal on him.

Devan Liebl, sr., P/1B, Wabasso

Liebl was the Rabbits’ ace on the mound, going 9-2 with a 3.74 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched. At the plate, the two-time All-Conference selection batted .275 with 17 RBIs on 19 hits, including seven doubles.

Isaac Fink, so., P/1B, Springfield

Fink gave up just five earned runs in 27 innings pitched for the Tigers, going 5-1 with an ERA of 1.31 and 27 strikeouts. At the plate, Fink had 15 RBIs and 10 runs scored on 15 hits.

Nick Altermatt, jr., P/SS, Wabasso

Altermatt was a power at the plate, batting .464 with seven doubles, seven triples and one home run on 39 hits as well as 24 stolen bases. On the mound, Altermatt was 5-4 with an ERA of 1.10 and 90 strikeouts compared to just 19 walks in 54 innings pitched.

Decker Scheffler, fr., 2B/C, Springfield

Scheffler came into his own in his second year as a varsity starter, batting .425 with eight doubles, two triples and one home run along with 21 RBIs, 23 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. He also has two wins in brief appearances on the mound for the Tigers.

SECOND TEAM

Kyle Windschitl, sr., P/IF, St. Mary’s

Windschitl was the Knights’ ace this season, going 6-2 with two saves, 19 strikeouts and a 2.11 ERA in 49 2/3 innings on the mound. At the plate, he batted .216 with 14 RBIs and 24 runs scored on 16 hits, including two home runs. For his career, Windschitl finishes with a 7-5 record on the mound with 35 strikeouts and a 3.17 ERA in 75 innings. He batted .275 for his career with 27 RBIs and 37 runs scored.

Hunter Ranweiler, jr., C, New Ulm

Ranweiler improved dramatically at the plate, jumping from being the No. 9 hitter as a sophomore to the leadoff spot as a junior. He hit .382 with an on-base percentage of .551 and eight stolen bases. From behind the plate, Ranweiler threw out 16 base runners. He was named the team’s co-MVP and is a two-time All-Conference selection.

J.T. Hoffmann, sr., CF, New Ulm

Hoffmann batted .346 this year with four doubles, two triples, 20 runs scored and 11 stolen bases for the Eagles as a senior. The three-year starter is a three-time All-Conference selection.

Carter Brinkman, jr., CF, Sleepy Eye

Brinkman batted .400 with 25 RBIs on 26 hits, including nine doubles and two triples for the Indians.

Hunter Johnson, sr., C, Nicollet

Johnson led the Raiders in every statistical category, batting .500 with an on-base percentage of .636 this year. He had 12 RBIs on 22 hits, including five doubles and one triple, as well as 15 stolen bases. He struck out just twice all season.

Avery Stevens, jr., P/IF, Sleepy Eye

Stevens went 5-2 with one save, 78 strikeouts and a 2.36 ERA this season for the Indians.

Tanner Vogel, jr., IF, Springfield

Vogel was a standout infielder for the Tigers in playing three different positions. At the plate, he hit .243 with 16 runs scored on 18 hits with 12 stolen bases.

Caleb Berg, sr., IF/OF, St. Mary’s

Berg made an impact after missing his junior season to a football injury. He batted .388 with 20 RBIs and 17 runs scored on 26 hits in earning All-Conference honors. He struck out just eight times in 67 at-bats this year.

Sean Salfer, sr., OF, St. Mary’s

Salfer batted .341 with 28 RBIs and 18 runs scored on 28 hits as a senior. For his career, the All-Conference selection batted .281 with 48 RBIs and 27 runs scored on 45 hits with 10 doubles and two home runs.
