Gopher Road Trip to visit New Ulm on May 23

NEW ULM — The University of Minnesota’s Gopher Road Trip will stop in New Ulm for a visit to connect with fans of all types on May 23.

The event, which will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23 at Turner Hall, will feature Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle, men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino, men’s hockey coach Don Lucia and new football head coach P.J. Fleck, among others. Other coaches scheduled to attend are Mike Burns (men’s gymnastics), Wendy Davis (rowing), Brandon Eggum (wrestling), Jenny Hansen (women’s gymnastics), Kelly Kremer (swimming and diving) and Michele Redman (women’s golf).

“I promised at my introductory press conference that we would do a better job of investing in our fans, who we ask to invest in us and our students,” Coyle said in a news release. “A lot goes into fulfilling that promise, but the Gopher Road Trip is certainly one piece of it. We need to invest time connecting with our fans face to face, wherever they are. By doing more events this year than almost any previous road trip, we’ll have more of those opportunities to get around the state and meet with fans who have supported our teams for so long.”

The Gopher Road Trip is making 14 stops throughout the state, also stopping in Winona, Rochester, Owatonna, Fairmont, Redwood Falls and Hutchinson during its first three-day stretch from May 22-24. From June 5-7, the Gopher Road Trip resumes with stops in Spicer, Perham, Park Rapids, Bagley, Coleraine, Hibbing and Sartell.

“On my very first day as the new athletics director last May, I hopped on the Gopher Road Trip bus, headed out into greater Minnesota and met hundreds of Gopher fans; it was an unforgettable day,” Coyle said. “I can’t wait to get back to some of those communities and see familiar faces, but I’m most excited to visit new stops and meet more Gopher fans.”

The event at Turner Hall in New Ulm will also feature complimentary pork rib sandwiches, sides and 1919 Classic American Draft Root Beer floats.

Registration is free and open to the general public. Anyone interested in attending is advised to pre-register by calling 1-800-U-GOPHER (1-800-846-7437) toll free or 612-624-8080 in the Twin Cities metro area. Registration can also be done at mygophersports.com under the Gopher Road Trip section of the website.
