Ranweiler wins, Howk takes 2nd at Big South Conference meet
REDWOOD FALLS — Junior Hunter Ranweiler was New Ulm Area’s lone conference champion at the Big South Conference wrestling tournament this past Saturday at Redwood Falls.
Ranweiler (18-1) beat Windom/Mountain Lake’s Alex Borsgard 5-4 in the 138-pound title match to win the conference crown. Sophomore Sean Howk (20-2) also made it to the finals at 132 pounds, but lost to St. Peter’s Wyatt Gillette in a 6-5 decision.
Tanner Stark (11-4) placed fourth at 160, falling to Luverne’s Jake Haugen in the third-place match.
Noah Linscheid (8-12 at 220 pounds) and Colby Wenninger (5-13 at heavyweight) both placed sixth.
As a team, New Ulm Area placed 11 out of 13 with 75.5 team points.
Redwood/River Valley had two placewinners. Omar Arredondo (11-6) placed fourth at 126 pounds and Chad Maddock (5-8) placed fifth at 220.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Springfield 78, Wabasso 50
SPRINGFIELD — Springfield beat Wabasso 78-50 in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game on Monday.
Isaac Fink led the Tigers (11-1, 6-0 Tomahawk) with 29 points. Tanner Vogel had 24 points, while Kale Meendering had 12 for the Tigers.
The Rabbits (1-10, 1-5) were led by Tony Franta’s 23-point performance. Myles Zeug had 10 points.
