NEW ULM — New Ulm Area picked up two big wins on a night that had added significance.
New Ulm Area downed both BOLD 47-30 and St. Clair/Mankato Loyola 63-14 in a wrestling triangular on Friday at New Ulm High School.
The triangular was designated as the TakeDown Cancer night, during which four local businesses donated $5 for every takedown or pin to the Randy Shaver Cancer Foundation for cancer research. The night was a success, raising more than $3,000 for the foundation.
“I was real happy with the kids; it’s a little special night here with the TakeDown Cancer night, it was a little incentive for these guys and they came out firing on all cylinders,” New Ulm Area coach John Rieser said.
In the first dual, the Eagles (4-7) stormed their way to a 47-0 lead behind bonus-point victories from Carter Brandes (fall at 113 pounds), Cole Ranweiler (fall at 120), Jacob Bertrang (fall at 126), Sean Howk (major decision at 138) and Lane Miller (major at 152) with three forfeits as well.
Brandes had a heck of a night, recording two falls in his matches at 113 pounds. The freshman appears undersized, but used solid technique to will his way to both wins.
“Carter definitely is a little undersized — he could make 106 — but he have him up at 113 so he’s undersized, but he has the heart of a champion so he definitely is going to outwork most of those guys,” Rieser said.
Brandes trailed 6-1 after one period against St. Clair/Loyola’s Lucas Kruse, but managed a 3-point nearfall in the second period to make it 6-4. He opted to start the third period in the top position and tallied a 2-point nearfall to tie the match before working Kruse onto his back for the fall.
“We’re working every day with technique on him,” Rieser said. “He needs to work a little more on his feet but on top and bottom, he’s real technical there.”
Bertrang was another big surprise at 126 pounds. Typically listed on the B-squad roster, Bertrang got his name called against BOLD’s Tanner Weidauer and managed to pin him with two seconds left on the clock in the first period to continue the Eagles’ streak.
“We had thought about wrestling [Brandes and Bertrang] at JV, but thought there was no reason to forfeit there, so let’s just wrestle those guys on varsity,” Rieser said. “Bertrang came out and wrestled real tough.”
After an 11-3 major decision by two-time state qualifier Sean Howk at 138 pounds and a forfeit at 145 by BOLD, Lane Miller kept the bonus-point train going with a 10-0 major decision against Jaden Huebsch at 152.
Miller was unable to duplicate his performance in his second match, but still had a gritty showing nonetheless.
“Lane had a great match that first one; even that second match, I thought he fought hard,” Rieser said. “He’s one who has kind of turned the corner at this point in the season and we’re looking for good things from him.”
The usual suspects got their wins — Cole Ranweiler notched two first-period pins at 120 pounds, No. 9-ranked Ryan Wacker got a forfeit and a fall at 132, Howk had a pair of victories at 138 and Hunter Ranweiler received two forfeits at 145.
Tanner Stark also had his hand raised twice with a forfeit in the first dual and a third-period fall in the second against St. Clair/Loyola’s Emil Olsson.
The Cyclones (1-12) forfeited six matches, while the Warriors (3-8) forfeited three.
New Ulm Area continues its season on Saturday at the Norwood Young America individual tournament.
