Springfield blanks Chargers

Springfield 5, MVL 0

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield softball team opened its Tomahawk Conference campaign with a 5-0 win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday.

Tiffany Schwanke was the winning pitcher for the Tigers. She struck out four and gave up no runs on three hits.

Springfield was led at the plate by Jenny Platz, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Gatzlaff was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Carlie Maasz took the loss for the Chargers. Maasz had five strikeouts and gave up three earned runs on five hits in six innings.

Maasz, Charlotte Pfingsten and Rachel Kuck each went 1-for-3 for MVL.

Springfield (1-0, 1-0) plays again today at Sleepy Eye, while MVL (0-1, 0-1) hosts Wabasso on Thursday.

Mountain Lake 0

MOUNTAIN LAKE – Madelia-Truman defeated Mountain Lake in a nonconference softball game Monday.

Beth Kotewa got the win for the Jayhawks. She went the distance, allowing two runs and striking out four. Savannah Stevens had a double and a run scored and Abigail Eldridge had a hit.

Madelia (1-1) is at St. Clair today.
