THUMBS DOWN The loss of Denny Warta The death of Denny Warta Wednesday is a monumental loss for the New Ulm community. Few other people were as heavily involved in the community as Warta or could claim a greater influence. Warta‘s greatest strength was collecting people. He knew how to forge and maintain relationships with a wide range of individuals. Warta could turn complete strangers into a friend after a short conversation. To the editor: In the depths of the Great Depression, a real President and leader, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, calmly looked to soothe the minds of the populace with his “fireside chats.” ... Of course, such sane speech would run afoul of the current president’s inflammatory rhetoric to spread fear. Project 2025, about which the president disavows any knowledge, would also be unhappy without the president’s minions being allowed to run the show and implement their scheme while DJT is busy golfing, doctoring, and micro-managing the interior decorating of what’s left ...

To the editor: As we approach Thanksgiving Day, we reflect on all the Blessings the good Lord has given to the people of the United States of America. We have just celebrated Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day. We need to thank our veterans that fought and the many that gave their lives to keep this country free. Food can transport you into the past or push you forward. But there are some situations where food can cause familial friction. At least that’s how it’s been for forty-some years with my wife and me. The foodstuff that’s been at the center of our domestic distress is lutefisk.
