Rot and decay

To the editor: I have remained silent after the disastrous 2022 elections in Minnesota. I have to say I dreaded what total Democrat control would bring to our State. The Democrats didn’t disapoint. The Easter season brings some similarities to mind. In Jesus’ time, things had to get worse (His death) before things could get better (His resurrection). For the State of Minnesota things have to get worse (total Democrat control) before they can get better (Republican control after 2024). Since the Legislature convened, it has been total chaos. Democrats have turned Minnesota upside ...

Nursing home nightmares

To the editor: January 2022 my husband had a massive stroke. He spent two weeks at Abbott Hospital. COVID kept us from seeing him. When he was due to come home, we wanted to do rehab at home. Despite having health care directives in place and not wanting nursing home care, someone made choices for us we had no say in. Feb. 14 he was brought to a care center. The driver gave staff an information packet. Staff went home. Since he had a feeding tube nobody knew how much to feed him as nothing was in their computer system. Feb. 15, our first day. I was met by staff who said my husband ...

Talk to kids about underage drinking

To the editor: As the school year comes to a close, prom and graduation will be here before you know it! While teenagers are focused on the photos, matching attire and dinner plans, it can be easy for parents to forget about the importance of meaningful conversations about the risks of underage drinking. Unsure about how to start the conversation? While there’s no one way to talk with your teen, “Family Talk About Drinking” can help guide you — it’s a free resource for parents designed to encourage open and honest communication with children of all ages about alcohol use, ...

Social Security being destroyed

To the editor: Forty years ago, reforms were done to the Social Security Fund/system. With the government corruption rampant now and the government constantly borrowing from the Social Security Fund and Medicare, this entire system will be totally defunct and destroyed in ten years or less, especially since not enough workers are paying in any longer, all of which is taxation on the monies earned to begin with. Unbelievable that Congress, mostly Democrats now, are totally against saving the Social Security funds. Of course they don’t care about this system since they all seem to be ...

Nursing homes need help now

To the editor: I am writing on behalf of our rural Minnesota nursing homes. The situation is very critical at this time for our elderly, Veterans and all of our Minnesota residents who are in need of 24-hour skilled nursing care. This shutdown would affect your Mom and Dad, close relatives and friends, our Vets or even yourself at some point in your life. When, or if, that time comes for needed long or short-term care, where will they be placed if no professional facility is available nearby? Rural Minnesota has already seen three nursing homes closed, and if funding is not granted ...

Not the first time for transferring state land

To the editor: The sudden news of the possible transfer of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Indian Community was shocking. However, it is not the first time that a Minnesota State Property (State Park, Memorial, Scenic Reserve, or Wayside) has been transferred. There have been 16 state properties transferred. Birch Coulee Battle Field State Memorial Park was transferred to the Minnesota Historical Society in 1975. Part of the park is managed by Renville County. In 1963, part of Kaplan Woods State Park was demolished to expand Highway 14 and the remaining part ...
