Trump’s empty promises

To the editor: Last year during his successful presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised that he would end the war in Ukraine on Day One of his presidency. We are now into month two. Yet the war rages on. Tuesday I woke up to headlines that said the United States sided with Russia in a United Nations vote on Ukraine. This vote identified Russia as the cause of the war. It’s happening in nursing homes

To the editor: Several months ago I wrote a letter with my concerns about what was going to happen to our loved ones in nursing homes if Medicaid were to be cut. The unfortunate answer is looking as if it will be happening if the new administration gets its way. To the Editor:      In Thursday’s New Ulm Journal (Feb. 20), “Grandparents Pride 2025” it shows the wonders of “God’s Creation to All”. “look at  all the beautiful children.”These little ones are the pride and joy of Parents, Grandparents, and Great Grandparents. Defunding nonpublic pupil aid disappointing

To the Editor: It was with significant disappointment that I became aware that the Gov. (Tim) Walz’s proposed budget for 2025 defunds some Minnesota students by eliminating nonpublic pupil aid. That money supports each student with funding for textbooks, testing, counseling, nursing and busing. Why would the governor back away from commitments of these essential services that our state has made to these students for the past 40 years? SAVE Act threatens sacred right to vote

To the editor: The .US. House of Representatives is considering a so-called SAVE Act - Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act which, if passed, would require citizens to present, in person, proof of U.S. citizenship when registering or re-registering to vote in a federal election. Acceptable proof is an original birth certificate or a valid passport. The name on the birth certificate must match the citizen’s current legal name. Consider your widowed elderly aunt, a lifetime voter, who has sold her home in Lafayette and moved to assisted living in New Ulm. She needs to ...

Trump sounds more like a dictator

To the editor: I am an American and, as such, at this point in time, I can still openly say,  that I strongly disagree with many of President Trump’s recent comments and leanings. He sounds more like a dictator, looking to becoming an emperor, than he does a president of the United States. I also have trouble understanding how any of our legislators can support this man who has openly suggested taking over Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal, even Gaza.
