Real research shows canceling Keystone XL project a failure for U.S. economy

To the editor:  The answer to our letter that we sent on June 4 needs some clearing up as to the response to the article on June 7 by Mr. Nelson. Yes, we have done our research. The report of 11,000 jobs was put out by TC Energy Corp. the Canadian Company building the pipeline. No where did it distinguish at that time whether full time or part time. Without the financial support from the U.S. government, it could not continue. The project labor agreement that T.C. Energy signed in August of 2020 with four labor unions promised the pipeline would create 42,000 jobs and provide $2 ...

Have some respect Mr. President — it’s not always about you.

To the editor: On June 14, the United States will celebrate Flag Day, and hold a celebration and parade in Washington D.C. to recognize the 250th anniversary of the US Army. This parade will be massive with thousands of soldiers and military equipment in the procession. The Army’s celebration at the National Mall was planned, however, a parade was not part of their initial plans. The parade idea was pushed by the White House, because June 14 is also President Trumps 79th birthday. Defense estimates place the cost of the parade and displays at $45 million. I am a U.S. Army ...

Show them we are not happy

To the editor: It’s a good thing to look at waste and fraud when cutting the deficit, but it must be done with proof and precision. So, were the subsidies to oil companies eliminated? Were the bloated military contracts examined? Elon Musk alone has received $38 billion. No, the programs, departments, agencies, grants, etc. which safeguarded and benefited the vast majority of Americans were targeted — education, environment, food for our most vulnerable, weather forecasting, consumer protections, vital research, national parks, veterans, Job Corps, Americorp, health care and the ...

Musk is no patriot or hero

To the editor: I’ve been thinking of the definition of a patriot and/or a hero. According to Webster a patriot is a person who loves their country and supports it. My addition even if means some loss for them. Hero: Person admired for their courage, outstanding qualities and achievements. Elon Musk has made billions off government contracts. Tried to cancel the Verizon so he could get a contract for his Starlink. He did not get paid per sa for DOGE but believe me he earned off that role. He did so much damage in such a short time which will take years to resolve. My heroes: Rosa ...

Do your research please

To the editor: While I realize that writing a letter to the editor is a way to express one’s opinions on current events, I would just like to ask that everyone does a little research before writing one. In the recent letter dated June 4 “Trump doing the best he can for all of us” the author referred to the cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline “eliminating 11,000 six figure jobs.” This information is totally false and took me all of 2 minutes on Google to find multiple sources that labeled this as false. This is just one example of many I have seen in the opinion pieces in ...

You call this a concept of a plan?

To the editor: You’ve heard it said many times in your life that actions speak louder than words. That was a sentiment stated recently in a letter to the editor in this publication. Well, let me tell you, my fellow Americans, that Iowa’s Senator Jody Ernst really stepped into a pile of her own making and did her best to disprove that age-old axiom. At a recent town hall Senator Ernst in a symbolic pair of red slacks tries to justify proposed cuts to Medicaid with this revelation: “We’re all going to die.” Thank you, Captain Obvious. (I’m glad she was prepared for the ...
