Support the Ivy House
To the editor:
“What can I do?” is a common response to the increasing violence we have seen in both our state and nation recently. Like many, I have been reflecting and praying on how to be a positive force for change. As a famous quote suggests, the only way to save the world is one person at a time.
Thankfully, we live in a community that is built on caring for our neighbors. As a board member of Ivy House, I’d like to share how this organization cares for others. Ivy House’s mission statement is, “Sharing God’s love with families by providing a safe and caring place for kids to stay”. In practical terms, Ivy House provides free and confidential care to children ages 0 through 10 when their families need extra support. Our family advocate assists families with their specific needs. Ivy House also provides free clothing, diapers, and other essential needs to our families. There are no income requirements to utilize Ivy House services.
Since families can use Ivy House services for any reason, our caregivers are prepared for all situations. We are a DHS licensed facility, and our caregivers receive regular training similar to that required for a daycare or preschool. Because we work with families in crisis situations, we also focus trainings on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Our goal is to support families, and minimize the potential of ACEs. Many studies have shown that stress from ACEs can negatively affect children’s brain development, immune system, and stress response systems. Conversely, preventing ACEs has been proven to reduce substance abuse, depression, and suicide, among others. Since Ivy House’s inception in 2017, we have had over 400 different children walk through our door to find a place to play, have fun, be safe, and experience God’s love for them.
What can you do? Please consider supporting Ivy House. Follow us on social media, share our posts, tell someone about our services, write to your elected officials to encourage appropriate childcare licensing regulations, volunteer your time, and/or donate financially. Together, we can make a difference!
