Trump’s promised a golden age

To the editor:

Donald Trump focused on the economy throughout his campaign. He blamed Democrats for the slow post COVID economic recovery, riding to the presidency on promises of an immediate Golden Age. Instead, Trump’s policies have worsened the finances of most Americans.

The nation’s job numbers went from lackluster in Trump’s first three months to dangerous levels over the summer. By August the labor market lost 13,000 jobs. The first negative job report since the COVID damaged economy of December 2020.

For consumers there are other signs of serious trouble. Trump’s tariffs have increased prices. Trump said tariffs help manufacturing, but manufacturing has been shrinking. Trump’s uncertain economy makes manufacturers loath to expand. Job shrinkage may lead the Fed to decrease interest rates, but it is hard to say. A tightening economy paired with inflation (stagflation) makes this a difficult call, as treating one usually worsens the other.

By August, most Americans believed the economy is worsening. People fear the “American Dream” is slipping away, that hard work will not build a better future. And they realize the ultra-wealthy got richer at their expense.

Trump and Congressional Republicans are oblivious to the concerns of average Americans. When asked how they will improve the economy before the midterm elections, Republicans replied that elections are a lifetime away, besides Trump will shape what voters care about. They believe voters will only worry about what Trump tells them to worry about.

Trump has been trying to distract voters, treating them as mindless lemmings ready to fall over a cliff at his word. But Americans are not that gullible. Voters will consider whether Trump has improved the lives of their family. Right now, the answer is an emphatic no.
