High Court reform needed
To the editor:
It is becoming increasingly obvious every day that the current U.S. Supreme Court does not care about the Constitution or the rule of law. They only care about delivering decisions based on the desires of their overlord, Donald Trump. Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump packed the court to do their bidding.
For some historical perspective the U.S. Supreme Court expanded from seven to nine members under Andrew Jackson in 1837. The Eighth and Ninth Circuits Act of 1837 was a federal statute which increased the size of the Supreme Court of the United States, and which also reorganized the circuit courts of the federal judiciary. When the Democrats again have a majority in the House, Senate, and the White House priority one must be Supreme Court reform. If not, then any laws which may be passed that the Republicans disagree with will be brought before the Supreme Court which will rule it unconstitutional regardless of whether it is or not.
I would suggest the Democrats follow the rationale of 1837 and expand the Court to 13 members which is the number of circuit courts in the United Sates now. I would also recommend that term limits are added, and no Justice can serve for more than 16 years. That would mean that John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, and Eleana Kagan would be replaced on the Court in addition to the additional 4 new justices. I would also suggest that a U.S. Supreme Court Office of Professional Ethics be formed to oversee the conduct of the court, so we no longer have blatant violations such as Thomas and Alito being bought and paid for by rich donors.
It is way past time that the Court again makes rulings based on the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law and not at the direction of whomever is in the White House.
