Feds overstepping in education curriculum
To the editor:
Our federal government is overstepping…it should have no control over curriculum in higher education, or K-12 public school curriculum. I have four children and served 12 years on a K-12 school board.
There have been complaints about curriculum recently, ie ‘sexual’ content concerning gender identity. This can be an uncomfortable subject for people. However, it is an undeniable part of today’s society. For children to navigate well in today’s world, they need to have basic information about their world and society. Today is not the world of 25-50 years ago.
Public school is where children are introduced to history, languages, science, mathematics, societal issues, etc. Families have different expectations and values. Schools introduce students to the wide variety of subjects that prepare them for life in a constantly changing world. Parents, then can personalize that education with their own thoughts, familial parameters, restrictions, etc.
